Ireland's EU Commissioner Michael McGrath is meeting senior ministers in the Canadian government this week as part of a three-day visit focusing on election integrity, the rule of law and safeguarding democracy.

The Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection is taking part in events in Montreal and Ottawa, including talks on consumer protection.

Among the individuals the former minister for finance is meeting are Minister of Justice Sean Fraser, Minister of Industry Melanie Joly and Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne.

The trip follows an EU-Canada summit meeting in Brussels in June and renewed discussion of election integrity, democracy and consumer protection issues on both sides of the Atlantic.

While in Montreal, Commissioner McGrath is also due to meet members of the Irish community and visit a memorial to more than 6,000 Irish immigrants who died of typhus between 1847 and 1848 after fleeing the Great Famine.

In recent months, the EU and Canada have sought to deepen their relationship, in part as a result of the changed nature of their relationships with US President Donald Trump's administration.
