Chu requests recount in DU/TC Seanad constituency

Green Party candidate Hazel Chu has requested a full recount in Dublin University/Trinity College's Seanad constituency.

In the final 15th count, Independent candidate Aubrey McCarthy was 31 votes ahead of Ms Chu.

Mr McCarthy had 3,741 votes, including 994 from Hugo MacNeill's transfers.

Ms Chu had 3,710 votes, including 547 transfers from Hugo MacNeill.

A decision will be made on whether to allow a full recount tomorrow morning at 9.30am.

This is the final seat in the Dublin University/Trinity College Seanad constituency.

Earlier, Independent Lynn Ruane retained the seat she first won in 2016.

Another incumbent, Independent Tom Clonan, was reelected to the Seanad.

Following his reelection, he said that it was a "huge privilege" and that he hopes to continue his work in the Seanad, particularly for disabled citizens and carers.

Meanwhile, Independents Rónán Mullen, Alice Mary Higgins and Michael McDowell were re-elected to the Seanad on the National University of Ireland panel.

Mr Mullen and Ms Higgins were elected on the eighth count after Mr McDowell secured his place on the first count.

Out of a valid poll of 36,114, the panel had a quota of 9,029.

Mr McDowell received 11,390 first preference votes, meaning he was elected with a surplus of 2,361.

On count eight, Mr Mullen secured his seat with 9,107 votes while Alice-Mary Higgins was elected with 8,822 votes.

The NUI constituency count has concluded.

Earlier, Independent candidate and former government minister Katherine Zappone was eliminated following the ninth count.

The first of the five Seanad vocational panels is also being counted today.

Sinn Féin's Pauline Tully has been elected on the Cultural & Educational panel.
