Gardaí have ended an examination of a suspicious package sent to the Social Democrats head office near the Dáil, after finding the alert was not credible.

The building on south Frederick Street and offices of other unconnected companies in the same building was evacuated around noon after the party received a package addressed to Eoin Hayes.

In a statement, gardaí said they were "alerted to a suspicious package on the grounds of a premises on South Frederick Street at approximately 10.30am.

"Following enquiries, the alert was not found to be credible. Investigations are ongoing."

Deputy Hayes was elected as a TD for the party in last month's General Election, in a surprise win in Dublin Bay South.

However, he was suspended from the party this week due to a company shares political controversy over his former employment in Palantir, a software firm that has since had the Israeli defence forces as one of its clients.
