Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys has presented legislation to cut weekly welfare payments for new arrivals from Ukraine to an Oireachtas committee this morning.
The legislation to reduce the payments from €232 to €38.80 per week is expected to come into effect in a matter of weeks.
The changes will also cap the time that new arrivals from Ukraine can stay in State accommodation at 90 days.
Ms Humphreys told the Social Protection Committee that she has tabled a number of amendments.
These "will remove the equivalence with Irish citizens" in accessing social welfare payments for those "in designated centres," she said.
Earlier this month, Cabinet approved the legislation to reduce the supports for new Ukrainian arrivals.
Under the changes, parents of children in State accommodation will continue to receive the full monthly child benefit payment of €140.
Only people in medical difficulty will be allowed to stay beyond the 90-day period.
The legislation will also mean that those receiving the new weekly payment will be required to engage with the Department of Social Protection's Public Employment Service.
There they will receive training and skills support to help them into employment.
