The Director of the National Women's Council (NWCI) has called on the Taoiseach to look at current asylum policy rather than making comments on migration.
Yesterday, Leo Varadkar said it was important that Europeans decided who entered countries, not human traffickers.
"Those who gain refugee status have the right to remain, but others don't and they should be returned," he said.
At a press conference announcing a demonstration against racism and division in society which will take place on 18 February, NWCI director Orla O'Connor said the focus needed to be on current policy.
Ms O’Connor pointed out that the International Protection Office needed more staff and said there had been appeals in that regard.
The Department of Justice is currently recruiting more staff for the office.
Campaigner Ailbhe Smyth described the Taoiseach’s comments as "unfortunate".
She said it was "unfair and a bit hard" and she said it was "not the time to make policy on the hoof".
The Taoiseach was speaking at a meeting of the European Council on migration and Ukraine regarding draft policy by the European Council.
The march in Dublin on Saturday week will call for diversity in society rather than division.
The group said the shared aim is to enable people in Ireland to live free from harassment, intimidation, and division.
It said a lack of appropriate Government policy has caused division, not the presence of ethnic minorities or refugees.
