WATCH: Interview with Phil Hogan following resignation

EU Commissioner Phil Hogan is resigning from his role following controversy over his attendance at the Oireachtas Golf Society event in Clifden, Co Galway last week, a spokesperson has said.

Speaking to RTÉ News, Mr Hogan said he took the decision to resign as the controversy was a distraction for people at a time when they were trying to grapple with the seriousness of the coronavirus pandemic.

"It was becoming increasingly clear that the controversy concerning my recent visit to Ireland was becoming a distraction from my work as an EU Commissioner and would undermine my work in the key months ahead," he said.
