The Dáil members' bar - used exclusively by TDs and Senators - has had to temporarily close as a large rodent was seen there this afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Houses of the Oireachtas has confirmed that the members' closed earlier this afternoon and remains closed while "the matter is dealt with."

A rat was spotted in the small bar area and staff closed it so the rodent could be removed.

It is thought that the ongoing multi-million euro renovation works in Leinster House may have disturbed rodents living below the 18th century building.

Leinster House on Dublin's Kildare Street dates back to 1745, and houses the Dáil and Seanad.

The Dáil members' bar and adjoining visitors' bar are situated close to the Dáil chamber.

It is expected that the final cost of the extensive Leinster House refurbishment works will cost in excess of €18 million.
