Labels that warn about the risk of cancer on alcohol products will be required by law, Minister for Health Simon Harris has indicated tonight.
The new measures will be contained in the Public Alcohol Bill that is currently making its way through the Oireachtas.
Tonight's statement follows days of speculation that Mr Harris was set to drop this measure from the Alcohol Bill.
However, a spokesperson has said it is Mr Harris' intention to highlight the link between cancer and alcohol through new laws on labelling.
"The Minister has considered the wide range of views expressed in recent days and concluded that this should be achieved through primary legislation," they said.
However, the Department of Health believes it may still prove difficult to get EU clearance to include cancer warnings on alcohol products here.
