Seven councillors on different local authorities across the country have indicated that they wish to nominate Seán Gallagher if he is to run as a candidate in the Presidential Election.

The move heightens speculation that Mr Gallagher is set to announce that he is seeking a nomination.

The group is made up of councillors from Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and from the Independent ranks.

They are willing to submit a motion to nominate Mr Gallagher, if he is a candidate, as well as support any vote that takes place at their respective councils.

They include: John McCartin (Fine Gael) Leitrim County Council, Tony Ward (Independent) Roscommon County Council, Michael O’Brien (Independent) Westmeath County Council, Ger Carthy (Independent) Wexford County Council, James Kelly (Independent) Laois County Council, Niall Kelleher (Fianna Fáil) and Wayne Harding (Fianna Fáil) Meath County Council.

In 2011, Cork City Council, and Clare, Leitrim and Meath county councils nominated Seán Gallagher to contest the election.
