The Austrian Chancellor has outlined his country's priorities as it takes over the European Presidency.
Speaking in the European Parliament, Sebastian Kurz said that as a 31-year old European, the EU "is the most natural thing in the world" for him.
However, he said peace, stability and change in Europe could not be taken for granted.
Chancellor Kurz said there had been a rise in tensions in the world and certain obstacles needed to be overcome at this sensitive time.
"For many years countries queued to join the EU and now with Brexit, countries are seeking to leave", he said.
Mr Kurz who leads the centre right People's Party in Austria outlined three priorities for his country's presidency of the EU.
They include focusing on external borders - strengthening security and fighting against illegal migration; prosperity in Europe - challenging the US and China in the development of high technology and being active in neighbouring areas - beefing up channels of dialogue and communications with Africa.
The motto for the Austrian Presidency, which will continue until the European Elections next year, is building bridges in the interests of Europe and the European Union.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said he was aware that external borders are of concern to the Chancellor and that the commission will discuss this with him when it visits Vienna this Friday.
He said it would take positive negotiations, charm and drive to reach conclusions regarding asylum questions.
President Junker also said the Austrian presidency would not be about the 'Vienna Schnitzel', (he confirmed he is a fan).
He said more is required than Vienna Schnitzel, such as positive negotiations and conclusions.
