A Solidarity-People Before Profit bill on sex education in schools has passed second stage in the Dáil, after Fianna Fáil decided not to press for a vote on the issue.

The bill will now be referred to the Oireachtas Education Committee for more detailed scrutiny and discussion.

The Provision of Objective Sex Education Bill, which was debated in the Dáil last night, guarantees the right of students to receive factual and objective relationships and sexuality education without regard to the school's ethos.

It contains provisions for education on consent, on different types of sexuality and different types of gender, on methods of contraception, and on the termination of pregnancy.

Yesterday, Fianna Fáil had said it would not support the proposed legislation.

The Government decided at last Tuesday's cabinet meeting that it would not oppose the bill.
