A picture of a young girl skipping on the tarmac of a military airport in Belgium after being evacuated from Afghanistan has gone viral on social media.

The picture was taken at Melsbroek military airport, northeast of Brussels, yesterday.

Former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt was among those who shared the photo on social media, saying: "This is what happens when you protect refugees... Welcome to Belgium, little girl!"

Earlier today current Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said Belgium has ended its evacuation operations after US sources informed the government of an imminent suicide bomb attack around Kabul airport.

A little over 1,400 people were evacuated by Belgium from Kabul, with the last flight arriving at Islamabad on last night, he said.

A major airlift operation has been taking place in Kabul since the Taliban seized control of the Afghan capital last week.

In total the Pentagon says 95,700 people have left Afghanistan via Kabul airport since 14 August.
