The creator of online messaging board 8chan has said he created a "Frankenstein's monster" after realising the forum has links to hate-driven killings in the United States and New Zealand.

Three gunmen who killed more than 70 people in three separate shooting incidents in New Zealand, California and Texas were believed to have posted open letters and manifestos to 8chan before their attacks.

Fredrick Brennan, who started 8chan in 2013 as a means of free speech, has been calling for it to be shut down due to the site's violent nature.

8chan was inaccessible at time of publication.

The forum has been known for its anonymous posts related to violence and white-extremist content.

US cyber security firm Cloudflare has said it will terminate 8chan as a customer, after a gunman used the messaging forum prior to killing 20 people at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas last week.

Mr Brennan, who left the portal's management to its current operator Jim Watkins in 2016, admitted it was difficult to moderate postings on the website, but said it could have done better with stricter moderation from the administrators.
