Man questioned over woman's death after assault in Waterford city

Gardaí are continuing to question a man in connection with the death of a woman following an assault in Waterford city.

Emergency services responded to an incident at a property in the Grange Heights housing estate at around 6.15pm on Monday.

Yveta Donovalova, a 43-year-old mother-of-three, was discovered with serious injuries.

She was was taken to University Hospital Waterford, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Ms Donovalova was from Czechia originally but had been living in Grange Heights for some time.

She worked as a cleaner and was well-known in the locality.

Ms Donovalova has been described locally as a hard-working woman and a good neighbour.

A man, aged in his 40s, was arrested at the scene.

He is currently being held at a garda station in the Waterford Division under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

It is understood that he and Ms Donovalova were known to each other.

The man can detained for a total period of 24 hours - excluding rest breaks - before he must either be released or have charges put to him.

Gardaí have established an incident room at Waterford Garda Station and a Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed.

A Family Liaison Officer has also been assigned to support Ms Donovalova's family.

Members of the Garda Technical Bureau arrived at Ms Donovalova's home this morning and took photographs to document the scene.

Uniformed gardaí could also be seen carrying out door-to-door inquiries.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

They particularly want to speak to anyone who was in the Grange Heights area on Monday between 6pm and 6.30pm.

They also want to speak to anyone who may have camera footage, including CCTV or dash-cam, from the area at the time.

Gardaí have said that investigations are ongoing.
