The body of a man was recovered from the sea earlier today by a French trawler 12 nautical miles southeast of Mine Head on the Waterford coast.
The fishermen found the body in their nets following a first haul at around 9am.
They alerted the authorities who directed them to Ballycotton in Co Cork where the body was brought ashore around 12.30pm. It was given into the custody of local gardaí.
It is understood the body had been in the water for some time.
It has since been taken to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination is to be carried out and DNA samples taken in a bid to identify the deceased.
The Coroner's Office has been alerted.
