A German registered factory supertrawler, the Helen Mary, has been detained in Irish waters for alleged fishery offences by the European Fisheries Control agency patrol boat, the Ocean Protector.

The vessel has been brought into Cork Harbour and has been tied up at the Port of Cork's deep water berth at Lisheen in Tivoli.

In a statement, the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority said it was aware that on Sunday, officers onboard the European Fisheries Control Agency's (EFCA's) offshore patrol vessel "detected suspected infringements of European fisheries legislation involving a sea-fishing vessel in the Irish Exclusive Economic Zone".

"The Joint Deployment Plans framework provides the legal basis where the relationships of joint deployment of inspections assets/inspectors are set and are applicable to all assets of the concerned Member States and EFCA," the statement said.

"When operating in EU waters, the EFCA inspectors always have Union inspectors from Members States onboard and they are the leading inspectors."
