A €5 million contract for the upgrade of accommodation at Cork's Collins Barracks has been signed by Tánaiste and Minister for Defence Simon Harris.

The refurbishment project will provide accommodation for 20 officers in an accommodation block originally constructed around 1806 and significantly repaired following a fire in 1922, but now in need of substantial refurbishment.

Last year, a new accommodation block for 41 soldiers was officially opened at the barracks - which is the permanent home of the 1st Brigade - following a €4.5m project as part of a €50m allocation for capital projects in the Defence Forces.

Mr Harris said the investment shows the Government's commitment to invest in modern, fit-for-purpose accommodation for army personnel across the country.

The block (Block 1) is listed as a building of regional importance on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage.

The scope of the works will include extensive external and internal works to ensure the structure and fabric of the building is preserved.
