The death has taken place in Cork of renowned historian and broadcaster Gabriel Doherty.
President of University College Cork Professor John O'Halloran said Mr Doherty was a valued colleague, friend, researcher and lecturer at the UCC School of History.
"Gabriel was an outstanding historian who deepened our understanding of key moments in Irish history. He played a significant role in the recent Decade of Centenaries commemorations and a leading role in research, teaching and examining in his field.
"Much admired and loved, his loss will be deeply felt in our community".
Most recently, Mr Doherty delivered the oration at the graveside commemoration ceremony for Dick Barrett, 3rd Cork Brigade Officer IRA, who was executed in 1922.
Professor O'Halloran extended his deepest sympathy to Mr Doherty's wife Gill, daughters Meabh and Úna, and son Oscar, as well as his friends and colleagues.
