A man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was attacked in Cobh, Co Cork.
The attack was carried out with a weapon with a long blade.
The incident happened in the car park of a convenience store on the Newtown Road at around 8pm last night.
The man, who is in his 30s, was brought to Cork University Hospital where he underwent surgery.
The man is currently being treated in the intensive care unit and his condition is described as critical.
It is understood that the man is from the Cobh area.
Gardaí are trying to establish a motive for the attack.
The car park where the incident happened was sealed off last night and a technical examination was completed this morning.
Gardaí are examining CCTV footage from the area and have appealed for witnesses and people who
were in the area at the time of the incident to contact them.
