The Cork campuses of Munster Technological University (MTU) are to close for two days due to what is described as a "significant IT breach and telephone outage".

In a statement posted on the MTU website, the college Vice President Paul Gallagher said all full and part-time classes on Tuesday and Wednesday have been cancelled.

This includes Bishopstown, Crawford College of Art and Design, Cork School of Music in Cork city, and the National Maritime College of Ireland in Ringaskiddy.

"Staff and students are asked to monitor email and the www.mtu.ie website for further information," the statement read.

"We have taken this precaution to allow us to fully assess the situation and protect our systems."

MTU tweeted about the outage shortly after 6pm yesterday evening.

Munster Technological University is a multi-campus technological university, with six campuses across the South-West region in Cork and Kerry.
