A 29-year-old man has been before a special District Court sitting in Cork charged with the murder of a homeless man in the city two years ago.

Ionut Cosmin Nicolescu was before the court, having been extradited from Romania earlier in the day.

He was charged with the murder of 64-year-old Frankie Dunne, whose body was found in the back garden of a derelict house at Boreenmanna Road in Cork on 28 December, 2019.

Ionut Cosmin Nicolescu was remanded in custody and will be back before the court again next Thursday.

Frankie Dunne was a father of three and was originally from Churchfield in Cork.

He was last seen leaving a Cork Simon homeless centre two days after Christmas 2019.

On the following day, his body was found nearby in the grounds of Castlegreina House on Boreenamanna Road.

Gardaí began a murder investigation.

Their enquiries have continued over the past two years.

Detectives from Cork travelled to Romania yesterday and extradited 29-year-old Ionut Cosmin Nicolescu on foot of a European Arrest Warrant.

At approximately 4pm at Dublin Airport, Ionut Nicolescu was arrested by Detective Garda Alan McCarthy and charged with the murder of Frankie Dunne.

Detective Garda McCarthy told Judge Olann Kelleher that Ionut Nicolescu replied: "I didn't do that".

His barrister, Elaine Audley, said her client was unemployed.

He was granted free legal aid.

She also asked that he be given any appropriate medical attention.

The hearing lasted less than five minutes.

There was no application for bail, because the district court does not deal with bail applications in murder cases.
