Benhaffafs celebrate anniversary despite restrictions

Twins Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf, who were born conjoined, have made the most of the 10th anniversary of surgery to separate them despite Covid-19 restrictions in place.

Their mother, Angie Benhaffaf, said the family held a party for the boys today.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, she said that they had balloons and baked a cake, adding that the most important thing is that the whole family is together.

She said this is day 25 staying at home for her family.

Her four children have surprised her with their dedication to school work, she said, but she has told them she would prefer that everyone does something that is better for their mental health while they deal with the ongoing health crisis.

Ms Benhaffaf said that as a mum she worries about the twins at this time because they would normally visit Great Ormond Street in London for treatment a few times a year. She said she did not know when London would get back to normal.

She said because of their complex health history, the boys can get sick very quickly.

Ms Benhaffaf said that last week one of Hassan's old wounds unexpectedly opened up and they had been due to travel to Dublin but that has had to be re-scheduled.

She said she was nervous to go into a hospital in case "we don't come back out", so she has been dressing the wound herself, which has thankfully got better.
