An operation has been undertaken near Ballycotton in east Cork, to airlift around 80 barrels of waste diesel and hydraulic oil from the 80 metre cargo ship MV Alta, which ran aground on rocks a week and a half ago.

The operation was supervised by engineers from Cork County Council and lasted for three hours.

Staff from their contractor LCF Marine gathered the barrels and attached them to a cargo line and net hanging from a helicopter.

The helicopter dropped the barrels in a safe zone about a two minute flight away.

Much of the waste material is due to be recycled, with anything that cannot be recycled to be disposed of safely.

There were extensive safety briefings before the operation began at 1pm.

Roads to the area were cordoned off.
