A 21-year-old man has appeared before the district court in Co Tipperary charged with assault causing harm to his father in the early hours of yesterday.
Stephen Butler, with an address at Ramsgrange, New Ross in Co Wexford, appeared before a special sitting of the district court in Carrick-on-Suir this afternoon.
He was charged with assault causing harm under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act, to his father John Butler, at Brown Street, Portlaw, Co Waterford, yesterday.
The 48-year-old man was found in his home with fatal head injuries.
The court heard evidence of arrest, charge and caution today at 10.18am.
Garda Sharon Ryan of Tramore Garda Station said he made no reply when cautioned.
Judge Terence Finn was told that the State would be objecting to any bail application on the basis of the seriousness of the charge and the likelihood of a more serious charge.
Solicitor Ken Cunningham told the court that he would not be making an application for bail today and sought an adjournment until Thursday, 16 January.
Judge Finn granted the State application and remanded Mr Butler in custody to appear again before the court on 16 January at Carrick-on-Suir. An application for free legal aid was granted.
