A 51-year-old man accused of causing an obstruction by climbing on top of an oil tanker at a fuel protest in Whitegate earlier this month has appeared in court.

Ivor Sweeney, of Coolbawn Lodge, Baelick Road, Midleton, Co Cork, is facing one charge that on 10 April at Main Street, Whitegate, he did an act, to wit, allow a mechanically propelled vehicle to remain in such a place so long as to cause, or likely to cause, the traffic through such a place to be obstructed contrary to the Road Traffic Act.

Court presenter Sergeant Linda O'Leary told Judge Colm Roberts at Midleton District Court that evidence of arrest, charge and caution had been given to the court by way of certificate.

Mr Sweeney's solicitor Wayne O'Sullivan said his application was for disclosure, which was granted by Judge Roberts.

Sergeant O'Leary said the State's applications were to amend Mr Sweeney's address and to remand him on continuing bail.

Judge Roberts remanded him on continuing bail to appear again before the District Court on 11 June next for a plea or to set a date for a hearing.
