A garda investigation is under way in Waterford after a number of migrants were found hiding on a ship.

The eight men, who are believed to be from Eastern Europe, are said to be in good health.

The men were discovered by the crew of a bulk cargo ship that had travelled from France to Belview Port, on the River Suir near Waterford city.

The ages and nationalities of the men are not yet known.

Immigration officers attached to Waterford Garda Station were alerted and met the men at the port.

They will be processed under Irish immigration law while gardaí say they will continue to investigate the circumstances.
