Using a mobile phone while driving is "killer behaviour" according to An Garda Síochána, who said it would lead to more road deaths.
A national appeal to motorists to drive safely has been made in the run-up to the end of summer holidays and back-to-school period, which gardaí say is traditionally a high-risk time on Irish roads.
The appeal comes after six road deaths in north Cork in the past month, the latest last Monday, bringing to 93 the number of people killed on Irish roads so far this year.
That figures is six more than this time last year.
There has also being an increase in the number of motorcyclists who have died this year - ten as opposed to seven between January and August.
Three of the deaths occurred in the past month in north Cork.
Superintendent Eddie Golden of the National Roads Policing Unit made the safety appeal today at the scene of the most recent fatal road collision at Newtwopothouse, near Mallow in Co Cork.
Supt Golden said people using their phones to access social media and video while driving or at traffic lights is an increasing and worrying trend. He described it as "killer behaviour".
He appealed to motorists "to do the small things well" - to check their mirrors, be careful at junctions and never drive with alcohol or drugs taken.
He appealed especially to motorcyclists to wear hi-vis jackets and to leave their dim lights on.
