Journalists from national and local media in Limerick gathered on the city’s O’Connell Street at lunchtime to remember the journalist Lyra McKee, who was shot while she was working in Derry last Thursday night.

Limerick Leader journalist and Chair of the South West branch of the NUJ Norma Prendiville said Lyra stood up for truth and seeking it out no matter how difficult.

Quoting President Michael D Higgins, Ms Prendiville said "an attack on a journalist anywhere in the world is an attack on the truth".

Lyra was anti sectarian and non sectarian - a campaigning journalist shot during the course of her work, and it was important that we remember our colleague and friend, she added.

Members of the National Union of Journalists, have been asked to remember Lyra in their newsrooms at 1pm tomorrow by observing a number of moments silence during her funeral tomorrow.
