A former president of University College Cork has been elected President of the European University Association.

Dr Michael Murphy is the first Irish person to hold the position.

The EUA represents more than 800 universities in 48 countries and it contributes to EU policies on higher education, research and innovation.

Dr Murphy previously served as UCC President from 2007-2017.

He has been congratulated on his election by the current president of UCC, Professor Patrick O'Shea.

"All of us at UCC are delighted at Michael's election as EUA President. This is a great honour for Ireland and he will be an excellent advocate for the university sector," Professor O'Shea said.
