The doors of a church in Tralee, Co Kerry, have been damaged after an ice-cream van was driven through them.

The doors of St John's Church date back to the 1800s.

It is understood a man drove the ice-cream van through the gates of the churchyard before crashing into the doors at around 10.30pm last night.

He then left the scene and was pursued by gardaí until the van came to a stop at Gallow's field in the northern end of the town.

The man was in possession of an imitation firearm and was arrested at the scene before being taken to Tralee Garda Station.

He was later brought to University Hospital Kerry for assessment.

Fr Francis Nolan described the incident at the church as a huge shock.

He said masses would carry on as normal and a wedding, due to take place tomorrow at the church, would also go ahead.
