Cyclist, 50s, dies after hitting railings in Co Laois

A man has died following a road traffic incident in Co Laois.

The man, who was in his 50s, was injured after he hit a railing while cycling on College Avenue in Mountmellick at around 4.30pm yesterday afternoon.

He was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise, where he died last night.

The road was closed for a technical examination and has since reopened.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses, particularly any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and who were travelling on College Avenue at the time, to contact Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 867 4100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

The man was the second person to die on the roads yesterday afternoon.

In Co Cavan, a man in his 30s was killed in a crash involving a tractor at Ardkill Beg in Carrickaboy.

Their deaths bring to 57 the number of people who have died on Irish roads so far this year.
