A man has been arrested after a firearm and ammunition were seized in Drogheda, Co Louth.

Gardaí executed a search warrant at a house in the town this afternoon.

During the course of the search, a semi-automatic firearm and ten rounds of ammunition were discovered.

A small amount of drugs and drug paraphernalia were also seized at the property.

A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene for an offence contrary to Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act.

He is currently being held at a garda station in the north west under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The arrest and seizure were made as part of Operation Stratus, which targets the sale and supply of drugs in the Louth/Cavan/Monaghan division.

The firearm has been forwarded for a technical examination by the ballistics section of the Garda Technical Bureau.

Gardaí have said that investigations remain ongoing.
