Over 40 workers at the Derrinlough briquette factory in Co Offaly have agreed a redundancy deal with Bord na Móna.

SIPTU Divisional Organiser Adrian Kane said the internal industrial relations process, involving the Joint Industrial Council, between SIPTU and Bord na Móna, has come to a conclusion.

He said of the 62 members of the workforce, 40 to 45 workers will opt for redundancy during August and a small number will opt for redeployment in the bog rewetting sector of the company.

"We were disappointed we didn't get, for their redeployment jobs, the wages they are currently on. However, there was a bit of give in the company and we did make some improvements," he said.

"Many in the workforce are in their 50s and felt they would prefer to settle for redundancy. They weren't attracted by the jobs being offered them by Bord na Móna," said Mr Kane.

"The redundancy payments will be the standard five weeks pay per year of service done," he added.

Production at the country's last briquette factory came to an end on 1 June after producing briquettes for 63 years.

It was closed because of the Government's decarbonisation programme.
