A 30-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with the stabbing of a 93-year-old man in Co Louth over the weekend.

James Reilly with an address at Gort Na Glaise, Blackrock, is charged with assault causing serious harm.

He also faces two other charges of possessing stolen property.

The court heard the accused was charged at Dundalk Garda Station at 12.10am this morning and made no reply.

Objecting to bail Garda Michael Rochford of Blackrock Garda Station noted the seriousness of the alleged attack.

He also told the court of the possibility of more serious charges in the case. 

Judge Treasa Kelly accepted the State's case and refused bail.

She remanded the accused in custody. 

He is due back before Cloverhill District Court on 16 August.
