Assistance was provided to a small number of homeowners who were affected by flooding in Co Laois over the weekend.

A number of houses in Errill, Rathdowney, Borris-in-Ossory and Mountmellick were flooded.

Kieran Kehoe, Director of services with Laois County Council, says the water levels in local rivers is half a metre lower than it was last November, when there was extensive flooding, and the council expects levels to further recede after some rain tonight.

Locals have criticised a lack of current information from Laois County Council as the levels on the river raised to flood point in many parts yesterday.

The council did not operate an information line for the public at the weekend because there was no severe weather alert in place from Met Eireann.

Mr Kehoe explained that some of the flooding was caused by melting snow and ice from the Sliave Blooms after a partial thaw of snow on the mountain range took place when temperatures went up last Saturday.

Water levels on the River Owenass in Mountmellick are being monitored after a weekend of heavy rain but authorities say the levels may have peaked for now and no homes have been flooded.

Residents in the Irishtown area are still on alert and thousands of sand bags remain in place.

The river will be monitored throughout the day and there is still concern about heavy rain due in the midlands tomorrow.
