A 33-year-old man has been further remanded in custody, after being charged in connection with the death of his mother in Galway at the weekend.

Dubravko Ostojic, of no fixed abode, is charged with assault causing harm to Milena Ostojic, at Claí Mór in Ballybrit.

The 65-year-old woman sustained serious injuries after being assaulted at her home on last Friday night.

She was taken to University Hospital Galway, where she died in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Mr Ostojic was charged with assault causing harm at a special sitting of Galway District Court last evening.

An application for bail was refused and Mr Ostojic was remanded in custody to appear by video-link from Castlerea prison at today's sitting of the court.

When the matter came before Judge Liz Healy this morning, Sargent Damien Prendergast told the court that instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions were required in relation to the charge and that these were not yet available.

There was no objection to the State's application that Mr Ostojic be further remanded in custody, pending those directions.

Judge Healy adjourned the matter to a sitting of Galway District Court on 11 May.
