Subsidies for accommodating students attending Gaeltacht courses are to be increased from €14.50 to €16 per person, per night.

The Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht said the move will benefit over 500 households and will be in place for the start of the summer language course season later this month.

The majority of courses are offered in counties Galway and Donegal. But students also travel to Mayo, Kerry, Waterford, Meath and Cork.

The subsidy for residential colleges providing accommodation is also rising by €1.50 to €12 per person, per night.

The department said the increase is the fifth to be announced since 2022.

Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary, said: "The households who provide accommodation, as well as the colleges, deserve recognition for the valuable resource they provide to those attending Irish language courses.

"I am confident that the increase in my department's support will help to cover the cost of providing accommodation and to attract more households to this important sector that will grow and develop in the coming years."
