Man, 42, charged with murder of man in Cork city

A man in his 30s has died after a suspected stabbing incident in Cork city

A 42-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a 31-year-old father of one in Cork city on Monday evening.

Jonathan Hennessy of Dr Patrick O'Sullivan Terrace, Upper Aghada, Co Cork, was brought before the District Court charged with the murder of Oleksandr Zhyvytskyi.

Mr Zhyvytskyi lived with his wife and infant daughter at Camden Court, close to Cork city centre.

At around 7.30pm on Monday evening he left their apartment to walk to a nearby shop for food.

When he returned, he had been stabbed.

His wife called the emergency services, but his condition deteriorated rapidly and he was later pronounced dead.

Yesterday morning, investigating gardaí arrested a man for questioning.

Detective Garda Kevin Motherway of Watercourse Road Garda station in Cork gave evidence of arresting Jonathan Hennessy and charging him with the murder.

He said Mr Hennessy made no reply when the charge was put to him.

Free legal aid was assigned after Judge Mary Dorgan was told the accused was on disability allowance.

Mr Hennessy was remanded in custody and will be back before the court via video link next Wednesday.
