A 28-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with the circulation of a video online which contained a threat to shoot the Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald.

Richard McGreevy from Whitechurch Place, Rathfarnham in Dublin, was refused bail and remanded in custody for a week.

Mr McGreevy was brought by officers from the Special Detective Unit before the Dublin District Court this morning.

He was arrested following the circulation of footage on Tik Tok, Facebook, X and other social media platforms of a man in a balaclava threatening, amongst other things, to shoot the Sinn Féin leader.

He is accused of making a threat to kill or cause serious harm to Ms McDonald intending her to believe it would be carried out.

The offence is alleged to have taken place three days ago at his home in Whitechurch Place, Rathfarnham in Dublin, and is contrary to section 5 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act

Detective Sergeant Gareth Kane gave evidence of arrest charge and caution.

He told the court that Mr McGreevy made no reply to the charge.

The detective objected to bail on a number of grounds including the seriousness of the charge, the nature and strength of the evidence and the potential sentence upon conviction of up to ten years in prison.

He also told the court that Mr McGreevy had also incited violence against the Garda Commissioner Drew Harris and other gardaí.

However, defence solicitor Kevin Tunny told the court that the 28-year-old had acquired brain injury, had lost his father and had been abandoned by his mother when he was three-years-old.

Mr McGreevy, he said, was "a loner" who lived on his own with his two dogs in a council house and he was concerned about them and about losing his home if he went into custody.

Mr McGreevy also addressed the court in his own defence, but Judge Paula Murphy refused bail.

She noted the seriousness of the case and remanded him in custody to appear again at Clover Hill District Court next week.
