Meta's rival to X/Twitter, Threads, is being rolled out in Ireland and across Europe from today.
The app, which was developed by Instagram, is used for sharing text updates and joining public conversations.
It was launched in the US in July but Meta delayed its roll out in the EU as it waited to see the impact of new regulatory changes for online platforms including the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act.
The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) said it has been engaged with Meta in recent weeks in relation to the launch of Threads.
"In November we wrote to them with several data protection recommendations," said Graham Doyle, Deputy Commissioner at the DPC.
"We understand that Meta have since made some changes to Threads prior to this launch and the DPC will continue to monitor and engage with Meta, as required," Mr Doyle said.
Starting from today, users in Ireland and across the EU can choose to create a Threads profile that is connected to their Instagram account or use the app without a profile.
People who use the app without a profile can browse content on Threads, search for accounts, share content via link copying or platform sharing, and report content, but they cannot interact with content.
Since launching Threads in July, Meta has made some changes to the app including a web version, a following feed and the ability to edit a post.
