Any funding which would be provided to the housing charity Peter McVerry Trust would be done with "conditionality", the Minister for Housing Darragh O'Brien has said.

Speaking at the Fianna Fáil Ard Fheis in Dublin, Minister O'Brien said he had received correspondence regarding a "funding request" for the organisation, which is facing financial difficulties.

He said he would be assessing the funding request in the coming week or two.

He added the main priority was the "service users" and the hundreds of "very dedicated staff".

The CEO of the charity Francis Doherty recently resigned.

He had written to the Government highlighting cash flow difficulties faced by the organisation.

Inspectors have been appointed by the Approved Housing Bodies Regulatory Authority to examine its finances.

In a statement last month, the charity expressed disappointment with Mr Doherty's decision, but wished him well after what it described as "a difficult period for him".

The charity said that its focus remains on the future of the organisation.

"We will co-operate with all stakeholders to achieve that as best as possible. Continuity of care for our participant group remains our priority," it added.
