Plans for a strike tomorrow at gas network infrastructure company GMC Civil and Mechanical Engineering have been suspended.

SIPTU had served notice of industrial action on the company in a dispute over pay and conditions.

The union said that a planned one-day work stoppage will not be going ahead tomorrow after progress was made with management.

However, the threat of strike action on Friday 26 May remains.

"We've been in talks with the company over the last few days, and we have made substantial progress on the issues," said SIPTU Organiser Andrew McGuinness.

"The talks are nearly concluded, we are just clarifying a number of issues and we should have a final proposal by next week," Mr McGuinness said.

GMC Civil and Mechanical Engineering operates the Gas Networks Ireland contract for the maintenance of gas supply.

It was feared the industrial action could have led to gas supply disruptions.

"The company welcomes this development and will continue to engage with SIPTU over the coming days," GMC said in a statement.
