Pope Francis appoints new apostolic nuncio to Ireland

Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Luis Mariano Montemayor, as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland.

The apostolic nuncio is the papacy's diplomatic representative in Ireland.

The Catholic Primate of All Ireland, Archbishop Eamon Martin welcomed the news and said he looked forward to meeting with Archbishop Montemayor when he takes up his appointment in Ireland "in the near future".

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1956, Archbishop Montemayor was ordained in 1985.

He has been apostolic nuncio in several countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo and most recently, Columbia.

He succeeds Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo who currently serves as apostolic nuncio in Prague.
