Pedestrian dies following Louth collision

A pedestrian has died after he was struck by an articulated truck in the early hours of this morning on the N1 in Co Louth.

The 21-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, which occurred at around 12.30am on the N1 at Carrickarnan, Drumad, Dundalk.

The driver of the truck, a man in his 30s, was not injured.

The road is closed for a technical examination and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses, particularly any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N1 at Carrickarnan, Drumad, between midnight and 12:30am, to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 042 9388400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

The man's death brings to eight the number of people who have died on the roads since Friday.

Yesterday, two men in their 70s died following a three-car collision on the N15 in Rathcormack, Co Sligo.

Three motorcyclists were killed in collisions, including two men in their 50s and 60s, who died in a crash on Dublin's M50 on Friday.

A motorcyclist in his 40s was killed and two other motorcyclists were seriously injured following a crash near Clifden, Co Kilkenny, yesterday afternoon.

On Saturday night, a 44-year-old woman died and two children were rescued after the car they were travelling entered the River Lee in Cork city.
