A woman has been charged with the murder of her elderly mother in Dublin city.

The body of Mary Bergin, who was aged in her late 70s, was discovered in her home on First Avenue, just off Seville Place in Dublin's north inner city on Wednesday morning.

45-year-old Moire Bergin, with the same address, appeared before Dublin District Court this morning.

Detective Sergeant John Brady of Store Street Garda Station told the court that Ms Bergin was charged just after 1am this morning.

Ms Bergin's solicitor, Catherine Dowling, made a number of applications to the court on behalf of her client.

Judge Conal Gibbons directed that Moire Bergin be given medical and psychiatric attention.

He also granted a request for legal aid.

There was no application for bail and Moire Bergin was remanded in custody to appear in court again on 21 April.
