President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina have tested positive for Covid-19 after taking an antigen test ahead of a scheduled visit to a school in Ballymun, Dublin.

A spokesperson said they both displayed mild Covid-19 symptoms and will isolate for the next seven days.

President Higgins, who is 80, will continue to work from his office at Áras an Uachtaráin.

First elected in 2011, President Higgins was re-elected to the role in 2018 for a second seven-year term.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health has reported 4,033 PCR-confirmed cases of Covid, while 4,304 people registered a positive antigen test through the HSE portal.

This morning, there were 670 Covid patients, with 43 in ICU.
