Gardaí have begun a murder investigation after the body of a 32-year-old woman was discovered in her home in Dublin this morning.

The woman was found with serious injuries at an apartment in Charlestown in Finglas at around 6.15am.

A 32-year-old man who was known to the victim was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.

He is being detained at Finglas Garda Station and can be questioned for up to 24 hours.

The woman's body remains at the scene.

Gardaí say there were no other people in the apartment at the time and they are not looking for anyone else at present.

Both the man in custody and the victim are believed to be originally from South America, possibly Brazil.

The apartment is being preserved as a crime scene and the State Pathologist's Office has been informed.

The Garda Technical Bureau is due to carry out a forensic examination of the scene.

Door-to-door inquiries are being conducted in the area.
