A three-year-old girl has died following a road traffic accident in Co Tipperary this afternoon.

The accident happened at around 4pm in the Castle Heights estate in Carrick-on-Suir.

It is understood the girl was playing near her home when she was hit by a bus.

She was pronounced dead a short time later.

Her body was taken to South Tipperary General Hospital where a post mortem will take place.

The bus is a private bus that was being used for a school run at the time.

It is understood a number of children were on board when the collision happened.

The scene of the tragedy has been sealed off and examinations are being carried out by garda technical experts and public service vehicle inspectors.

Gardaí at Carrick-on-Suir are appealing for witnesses or anyone with mobile phone or dashcam footage to contact them.

They are treating the incident as a tragedy.

Gardaí are also speaking to residents of the roads around Castle Heights in an attempt to gather more information on what happened.

A garda liaison officer has been speaking with the family of the victim.
