It will be impossible for large congregations to assemble for Mass on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, according to the Catholic Bishops.
They have urged people attending mass at Christmas to do so at some point during the twelve days from Christmas Eve to Epiphany.
In a statement following their Winter 2020 General Meeting they have said that "Christmas is about more than just one day".
They have strongly encouraged families to attend Mass via webcam and have called on "household bubbles" to offer a Christmas prayer at their local church cribs at some stage over the 12 days.
They have also reminded Catholics that the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days remains suspended during the pandemic.
The statement notes that preparations have begun in parishes across the country for the celebration of Christmas.
It says Priests working with Parish Pastoral Councils are making decisions at a local level.
