Temperatures in Ireland have been higher than average this week, with the mercury reaching a high of 26.8 degrees Celsius today at Mount Dillon in Co Roscommon.

The average temperature for this time of year, according to Met Éireann, is 16 to 18 degrees.

However, the mercury exceeded those figures in most parts of the country, with the warm weather set to last into the Bank Holiday weekend.

It is set to be a few degrees cooler on Saturday and Sunday, but temperatures are still likely to reach the early 20s, although Ireland is not currently experiencing a heatwave.

Meanwhile, those planning on enjoying their five kilometre exercise are being warned not to light campfires or barbecues in public places.

Dublin Fire Brigade has tweeted a warning about forest fires, which are common during warm weather.

It comes as the Deputy Director of the Irish Coast Guard has warned people against swimming in unfamiliar waters this weekend, after six people were rescued when they got into difficulty near Inchydoney beach in Co Cork yesterday.
